VISUAL BALANCE
"For UCSD Medical Center, the design team envisioned a patient room that created a hospitality experience not based on the materials of the room but the actual feel and comfort of the space."
"Shield was key in helping us realize this vision."
"Key to this hospitality approach was establishing a visual balance between providing the functionality required in a hospital room, which typically dominates the visual experience, and allowing the headwall to be the visual focus of the room."

DESIGN AND FLOW
"We were developing full scale room mock-ups for a large healthcare client and I came to Shield with a sketch of a particularly difficult articulating workstation. After one initial meeting, they were able to take my concept and develop a working prototype that the client loved.
They not only have the shop to build high quality pieces, but they have a great design team that will help you develop anything you want to do. Plus they do all this at a competitive price."

FAQ
When should I contact Shield about my project?
At our core we are designers. We love kicking around ideas early, helping figure out how to achieve your design goals or your client’s operational goals. We’re typically not SD people (we’re still perfecting our cladding system) but we’re pretty darn solid DD people. The sooner we're involved the better.
How much do you charge for design?
This is the best deal going. Shield never charges for early project consulting. We are designers, and so are trained to help you through this process, but we are also makers. We recognize that if we want to build awesome work, we need to help make sure we help you keep it that way...and keep it on budget.
Do you make the solid surface?
This is a great question. Our clients and our in-house robots have been asking this for years. The answer is no.
Solid surface was created by DuPont in the 1960s and since their patent expired, many other competitors have moved into the space. Solid surface is largely a commodity these days and right now it makes more sense to buy it from others than to make it ourselves.
We do have proprietary blends from a few manufacturers so please call us and we can walk you through how to specify....and always with Shield’s lifetime warranty.
Why should I partner with Shield?
Because you want to make cool sh**!

The core guiding principles identified for furniture surface characteristics are: durability, cleanability, inability to support microbial growth, surface porosity, and absence of seams.
Durability
Acrylic solid surface is homogenous, easy to maintain, and repairable. It lasts so long you may never need to replace it.
Cleanability
Fluid-resistant and non-porous, acrylic solid surface stands up to strong hospital-grade cleaners and disinfectants, including bleach.
Miocrobial-Resistant
Acrylic solid surface doesn't hold moisture so it doesn't support microbial growth, which can help prevent infections of staff, patients, and visitors.
Non-porous
Acrylic solid surface is primarily a combination of aluminum trihydrate (ATH) - a natural mineral - and acrylic resin. Once cured, this inert, GREENGUARD certified material is also class-A fire rated.
Seamless
Shield has patented methods of building with solid surface unlike any other manufacturer. Chemical welds create virtually seamless joints and connections in acrylic solid surface.
lifetime protection
Some things shouldn't be disposable, which is why we stand by our products with an unmatched lifetime warranty. We'll fix or replace any manufacturer's defects, for life.
