Q&A Tuesday: Is solid surface expensive?

  |   Product Development, Work   |   No comment

Everyone cares about price. We all want to save a penny when possible. It’s natural, then, that many people ask us about the price of solid surface. Is solid surface expensive?

The quick and easy answer is yes. If you compare the price of solid surface to that of, say, laminate, it will be much more expensive. But there are many factors to consider when looking at the price of solid surface.

It’s cheaper than many traditional materials

While solid surface is certainly not the cheapest option, it’s definitely not the most expensive one, either. According to consumerreports.org, the cheapest materials, such as laminate or ceramic tiles, range from $10 to $30 per square foot, whereas the more expensive ones, such as stainless steel and granite, can reach up $200 per square foot. Solid surface falls in the middle, ranging from $35 to $100 per square foot, making it comparable in price to materials such as quartz and marble.

You get what you pay for

Quality counts. When you buy a product that gives you a bigger bang for your buck, you save money in the long run. Laminate is cheaper, but it’s maintenance cost is high and it’s average life cycle is one to five years. Stainless steel has a low maintenance cost but lasts only three to seven years, on average. Solid surface not only has a low maintenance cost but also lasts for decades. Moreover, while many materials are non-renewable, solid surface is easy to repair when scratched or stained. Therefore, while more expensive than other options initially, solid surface is a cheaper long-term option. Read more on the long-term savings of solid surface here.
